VENICE, Italy -- Our first evening in Venice, a choir sang for us alone.
Voices beckoned us in from the twilight on the empty piazza outside the Chiesa di San Nicola da Tolentino. Inside, the choir was practicing — 15 voices seeming like 50 as they lifted their song and filled the late 16th-century church. The sound reverberated off the marble and rose to fill the squat, painted dome.
