Travel Tips: Making most of the internet

Travelling is never the same anymore since the boom of the internet. Unlike before, keeping in touch with friends, colleagues, and loved ones is very simple and very easy. Some though are not as tech savvy as other people, so we lined up some tips on how you can make most of the technology available while you are travelling:
Get an email that is web based
If you know how to surf the net and you have an email, it will not cause you a single drop of sweat set up a web based email. In case you do not have a Google, a Yahoo! Or a Hotmail, then it is time to get one.
A web based inbox will allow you to check your email messages anywhere you are in the world as long as you have access to the internet. This gives you an advantage over the usual POP accounts using software like MS Outlook or other programs available.
Here’s how you should go about it. You can forward all your emails from your different email addresses to your web based email. This way it will be easier to scan everything in a single inbox and also reply to urgent concerns while you are travelling.
Use online Instant Messaging
The advantage of using the web based instant messenger is similar to the web based email. You can use it anywhere without having to install a software. Some of the most popular IM over the interweb are GoogleTalk, Meebo, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and ICQ. You don’t have to worry about installing a messenger on the computer that you are using like when you rent a computer on a cafe.air
Scan important documents and send them via email to yourself
Make it a habit to scan essential documents like your passport, airline tickets, and insurance policies when you travel. Email these documents to your own inbox so you can easily retrieve them in case the need arises.
Use a thumb drive
You can also have a USB drive on hand so you can save your pictures or maybe have your important documents handy. These thumb drives are very affordable and some can even encrypt the data in case you need some digital security.
Skype
If you want to save on overseas calls, get a Skype account. It is very easy to setup and you can make most of their free calls and cheap overseas calls. In case you are abroad and you need to keep in touch with home or office, Skype can save you a lot of money. All you will need is a computer and an internet connection.
